Gas compressors:
Summit currently offers 8 types of gas compressor lubricants designed for use in rotating equipment in various applications: well-head, refineries, landfills, transmission, fuel gas, biogas, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), reinjection, hydrogenation, power generation, waste gas, chemical plant, vapor recovery units, off-shore and CNG.

Three examples are listed:

NGL series:  The NGL series of lubricants are polyalkylene glycol (PAG) based synthetics developed mainly for use in reciprocating compressors.  NGL prevents hydrocarbon gases from washing the lubricant from the cylinder walls which causes excessive wear.  It is used with sour and acid gases such as H2S and CO2 for better corrosion resistance and with process gases were dilution of non polyglycol based lubricants is an issue.  The use of polyglycol allows for lower feed rates and reduced oil carryover to sensitive areas downstream of the compressor, such as underground storage, well formations and CO2 injectors.  Another added benefit is reduced stiction of valve plates where over lubrication with mineral based oils is an issue.  NGL is UOP approved for use with UOP catalysts.  The NGL series is a PAG copolymer with an EO: PO ratio to provide the best properties of both types of polyglycol.

PGS series:  The PGS series is also PAG based and are formulated mainly for use in rotating equipment compressing high BTU hydrocarbon gases.   They are available in a variety of ethylene oxide: propylene oxide ratios to meet the most stringent demands of applications like VRU units.  They are offered when the use of petroleum or other hydrocarbon based oils, such as synthetic PAO, are limited due to excessive dilution of lubricant viscosity by absorption of the gas into the lubricant.  The PGS series provides superior bearing protection in environments with much higher levels of water contamination than a hydrocarbon based oil is capable.

LCG-100:  LCG-100 is a synthetic PAO based lubricant developed for the corrosive environments found in landfill gases.  Use of LCG-100 results in extended life of compressor bearings due to its ability to inhibit the corrosive nature of these types of gases.  PAO is one of the least reactive lubricant base stocks available and is less likely to form reaction products with landfill and process gases that might react with ester or PAG containing lubricants.

Air Compressor Fluids: Summit offers a complete line of fully synthetic air compressor fluids manufactured from PAO (polyalphaolefin), ester, PAG and silicone base stocks.  Synthetics oils offer extended fluid life and excellent solvency characteristics to keep the lubricating system free of varnish and sludge.

SH Series:  The SH series is a full synthetic based upon PAO for use in rotary screw, scroll and centrifugal air compressors.  SH lubricants have a high viscosity index (V.I.) and low pour point.  This combination allows its use over a broad operating temperature range.  Normal expected life is 8000+ hours at temperatures up to 220 ºF in rotary screws.  It is compatible with mineral oils and with seal materials normally used with these oils.  Oil carry over and makeup rates are significantly reduced compared to mineral oils.

Ultima Series:  Ultima is a high performance synthetic formulated to outperform other synthetic air compressor fluids.  It can be operated at a temperature and humidity much too high for other synthetics and still provide an oil life of 12000+ hours under normal conditions.  Ultima is compatible with PAO, mineral, ester and PAG based lubricants.  No special flushing procedures need to be taken when converting one of these types to Ultima.   The use of Ultima reduces the risk of cross contamination when PAGs and hydrocarbons are used in the same facility. Formation of varnish and sludge is minimized with the use of Ultima.

DSL Series:  DSL is for use in reciprocating and sliding vane compressors.  The DSL series is made with esters which nearly eliminate the formation of carbon deposits on the valves of high temperature compressors.  A low pour point means one lubricant can be used year round – eliminating seasonal changes.  The DSL has a very low coefficient of friction resulting in large energy savings compared to mineral oils.  A high flash point, high auto ignition temperature and virtually carbon free system provides increased operator safety by reducing the risk of fire or explosion hazards.
